About the Item

A handsome matched pair of George III sterling silver lemon strainers by David Hennell of London, individually hallmarked 1760 and 1761. Of identical form, pattern and size, the two were made within months of one another by the same distinguished maker and are presented together as a pair. Each strainer is of circular twin-handled form, the deep bowl finely pierced with a radiating star-and-rosette pattern of drilled apertures within a reeded rim, flanked by a pair of flat, pierced scrolling openwork handles. Designed to rest across the rim of a punch bowl or goblet, strainers of this type caught pips and pulp when adding lemon and citrus juice to punch — an indispensable accessory at Georgian gatherings, and equally at home with a modern cocktail service. The two strainers carry their original 18th-century owners' engraving: one bowl is engraved to each side with an armorial crest, while the other bears a contemporary triangular marriage cipher ("I·W·S"), reflecting their separate early ownership before being brought together as a pair. The Hennells were one of the most respected dynasties in English silver. David Hennell I (1712–1785) founded the firm in 1736 and worked under his own mark until taking his son Robert into partnership in 1763, after which their pieces bear a joint mark. The sole "D·H" maker's mark therefore places both strainers firmly within his independent working period. The consecutive London date letters — for 1760 on one and 1761 on the other — indicate two pieces assayed within months of each other, straddling the spring date-letter change at the very start of George III's reign, exactly as one would expect of strainers of a single pattern produced in close succession. Each piece is fully hallmarked to the bowl with the maker's mark of David Hennell, the crowned leopard's head for London, the lion passant for sterling standard, and the date letter. Lemon strainers were almost always made and sold singly, so the opportunity to acquire two of this quality, by a single celebrated maker and in matching pattern, is an uncommon one.

Wear consistent with age and use. Very good antique condition. The piercing crisp and intact on both strainers, with surface scratches, light wear and a mellow patina consistent with age and period use. No splits, holes or repairs to the bowls or handles.
