About the Item

Vintage Bing & Gröndahl "Seagull" Porcelain Tureen with Seahorse Handles (Model 5/512) Designed by Fanny Garde (decoration, 1895) and sculpted by Pietro Krohn, the iconic Seagull (Mågestellet) service is a cornerstone of Danish decorative arts. This porcelain lidded tureen features Garde's delicate cobalt-blue seagulls in flight against a shaded ground, set on Krohn’s maritime-inspired relief body with embossed fish-scale textures. The centerpiece is framed by sculptural seahorse handles and a matching finial, all detailed with hand-applied gilt accents and gold rimming. GOLD DECORATION The gold decoration is exceptionally well preserved, with virtually no visible wear, suggesting that the tureen has been very lightly used or perhaps never used. Model Numbers: Pieces featuring gold trim often have a three-digit number marked on the underside (for example, 512 for this tureen). Care Instructions: Because the trim is made of genuine gold fired directly onto the glaze, these pieces are not microwave-safe (the metal will spark) and should always be hand washed to prevent the gilded shine from dulling over time. Period: Circa 1970–1983 (stamped Copenhagen Porcelain Made in Denmark) Quality: First quality / factory first (no scratch through the three green towers) Markings: Fully stamped, model numbered 512, featuring the gilder’s mark and the hand-painted artisan initial K DIMENSIONS Height: 17 cm (approx. 6.7 in) Diameter (with handles): 25 cm (approx. 9.8 in) Diameter (without handles): 22 cm (approx. 8.7 in)
