Engobed stoneware sculpture « Solstice » by Mart Schrijvers. Artist signature under the base. 2024. H : 8.3 x 10.6 inches. - Born in 1973 in Belgium, lives and works in the Gers, France. Observing nature evolve and transform with the seasons is a profound source of inspiration for Mart. Her porcelain creations convey the freshness and promise of a dawning morning, capturing the delicacy of organic forms and the subtle light of fleeting moments. Mart begins by shaping a suggestive form in porcelain, either on the wheel or with slabs, before adding modeled extensions or “petals,” arranged with meticulous care. The making of a single piece can take up to a month. The extremely slow drying process and the handling of the pieces in their raw state require great delicacy. Once glazed, the work undergoes a second firing at 1300°C, revealing the purity and depth of the material. After studying landscape design in Brussels, Mart moved to Berlin in the mid-1990s, where she worked as a landscape architect on urban projects. In 1998, she discovered Gascony and became fully involved in the French contemporary ceramics scene. In 2003, she established her own studio in the Gers countryside, where she continues to explore the infinite variations of porcelain and light, combining technique, sensitivity, and observation of the natural world.
