About the Item

African Dan Yakuba Guard Mask Small Shells and Bells from the Ivory Coast 1970s Female wooden mask with rich decoration of textile elements, small shells and ceramic beads. The mouth, nose and eyes are highlighted and a carved band runs across the forehead. Height with black metal stand 65cm "The Dan (or Yacuba) This people of farmers live in the mountainous regions of the tree-covered savannahs in the west of the Ivory Coast near the towns of Man and Danane, but also in the neighboring regions of Liberia. They are estimated to number around 350000, of which 270000 live in the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire. They speak a language derived from that of the Mandé group and are therefore regarded as >the Mandé of the South<. Living mainly in villages, they are organized in patrilineal tribal groups and are subject to double exogamy (unions between cousins in the maternal and paternal line are forbidden). In most cases, they have remained faithful to the rites of their ancestors and are familiar with numerous sacred objects, especially masks." "Masks with soft, feminine features, narrow eyes and a bulge above the forehead studded with cowries can be assigned to various functions. On the one hand, these masked figures perform dances to entertain the population. Some of these takangles specialized in singing. In their function as singing masks (gle sö), they support the >great mask< (go ge), through which the influential go federation, which fulfills judicial and peacemaking tasks, expresses its authority. On the other hand, this type of mask belongs to the boys' circumcision camp. These guardian masks (deangle), which serve as mediators between the camp and the village, are often characterized by an eye area painted with kaolin clay, which can also be seen on women during ritual celebrations. This white color is a symbol of joy, but also symbolizes the world of the ancestors."

African Dogon Tribal Bronze Figure “Mother with Child" Burkina Faso, 1970s

African Dogon Tribal Bronze Figure “Mother with Child" Burkina Faso, 1970s

Located in Salzburg, AT

Fantastique African Dogon tribal bronze figure “Mother with Child,” Burkina Faso, 1970s The heavy figure shows a dynamic representation of a mother in motion with her toddler in her arms. The object is so appealing because it has been elongated and the legs, arms, and headdress are exaggerated. The ribbed headdress is central, and there are also large earrings and a loincloth. The casting is very detailed and finely crafted. Due to its weight and size, we have mounted the object on an acrylic base. Dimensions of the figure: W 18cm x D 6cm x H 69cm Bronze figures associated with the Dogon people mainly originate from Mali and Burkina Faso. The Dogon are known for their cosmogony and religious rituals, which are reflected in their art. Dogon bronzes...

Antique Papua New Guinea Hand-Carved Tribal Mask, Sepik River Region, Early 20th

Antique Papua New Guinea Hand-Carved Tribal Mask, Sepik River Region, Early 20th

Located in Miami, FL

Antique Papua New Guinea Hand-Carved Tribal Mask, Sepik River Region, Early 20th Century An evocative and finely crafted tribal mask from Papua New Guinea, likely originating from the Sepik River region, renowned for its powerful ceremonial art and expressive visual traditions. This striking mask is constructed from handwoven vegetal fibers, rather than carved wood, reflecting a distinct regional approach within Papua New Guinea ceremonial arts. The bold facial composition features exaggerated eyes, pronounced contours, and graphic detailing—hallmarks of Sepik-influenced ritual objects. The surface displays a rich, naturally aged patina with visible wear and tonal variation consistent with age, ritual handling, and long-term environmental exposure. Hand-applied pigments in multiple colors further enhance its visual impact and ceremonial character. Masks of this type were traditionally used in spiritual and ceremonial contexts, often associated with ancestral reverence, initiation rites, or protective symbolism within village life. Today, such works are highly sought after by collectors of tribal and ethnographic art, as well as interior designers seeking objects with strong cultural narrative and sculptural presence. A compelling sculptural object whether displayed on a wall or as a standalone accent, this mask brings depth, history, and a sense of the primal to any refined interior or curated collection. Condition: Good antique condition with age-appropriate wear, surface patina, and minor irregularities consistent with traditional hand-weaving, hand-painting, and use. No restorations observed. Authentic Early 20th-century Papua New Guinea masks...
