About the Item

Exceptional antique Native American Sioux parfleche box dating to circa 1900, an outstanding example of early 20th-century Plains Indian painted rawhide artistry. Constructed from stretched and stiffened hide, this unusual box-form parfleche features bold, symmetrical geometric designs hand-painted in richly saturated mineral pigments. Parfleche containers were an important part of traditional Plains life, valued for their lightweight yet exceptionally durable construction and used to transport clothing, food, personal belongings, and other essentials. Box-form examples are particularly desirable for their sculptural character and relative rarity compared with the more familiar envelope-style parfleches. The striking geometric composition gives this Sioux parfleche a distinctly modern visual quality, with strong linear motifs, balanced symmetry, and beautifully aged color. The combination of authentic patina, hand-painted decoration, and traditional rawhide construction makes it equally compelling as an ethnographic artifact, Native American collectible, or sculptural decorative object. At 17 inches wide, the piece has an impressive presence when displayed on a shelf, table, or within a curated collection. Its graphic character also makes it particularly well suited to Southwestern, Western, rustic, and contemporary interiors. A remarkable surviving example of Plains Indian art and craftsmanship, this antique Sioux parfleche box offers collectors a rare combination of cultural history, authentic materials, graphic design, and decorative appeal. Dimensions: 8 inches high x 17 inches wide x 8 inches deep.
