Vintage Handwoven Striped Tablecloth from the Sárköz Region A vintage handwoven tablecloth from the Sárköz region of southern Hungary, recognized for its rhythmic striped composition and textured woven surface. Created using traditional plain weave (vászonkötés), the textile reflects the refined domestic weaving culture characteristic of rural Central European households. The villages of Sárköz — Őcsény, Decs, Sárpilis, Alsónyék, and Báta in Tolna County — developed a distinctive textile tradition, particularly known for their finely structured white cotton tablecloths (abroszok). These pieces were often woven from joined panels and decorated with red, blue, and black geometric striping. Characteristic motifs include H-shaped elements and small geometric rose forms known as apró szedettes. These decorative patterns were traditionally created using wooden board techniques rather than standard harness weaving, producing subtle relief and a dense, almost carpet-like texture. Each textile reflects the individual rhythm and skill of its maker. As many of the women who preserved this weaving knowledge in the villages have now passed, surviving examples represent an increasingly rare expression of Hungarian vernacular textile culture. Originally intended for everyday domestic use, these woven pieces today function both as table linens and as collectible examples of Central European rural craft heritage.
