About the Item

A Unique and charming American arts and crafts carved and hand pyrographed maple wood single drawer table created by the rarely encountered George S. Stewart Company, Norwalk, Ohio. Signed with their "GSS" monogram in the exterior upper right leg (photo) The whimsical top burned with a verse from the 18th century English nursery rhyme "Old King Cole", suggesting this table was possibly intended for use by a pipe smoking gentleman and the splayed slab sides leg sides were burned, carved and stained with wonderful Medieval heraldic symbols as shown. The witty wording on its top is: "He called for his pipe and he called for his bowl and he called for his fiddlers three" Dimensions : 24 inches high and 20 inches wide A rare possibly one-of-kind example of clever imagination whose portable size suggest many uses This unique work of art is fun and is hand-finished while exuding graceful age. The artist used stains and oils and incising in great detail using an arts and crafts pyrographic (wood burned) technique. Hand stained and hand burned and hand carved using pyrographic (wood burning) techniques Provenance: Old New York collection. History of the Pyrography: py·rog·ra·phy / noun is the art or technique of decorating wood or leather by burning a design on the surface with a heated metallic point. Pyrography was particular popular during the last quarter of the 19th century and first quarter of the 20th century. In rarer instances, the pyrography decorative technique was combined with hand painting using stains and oils and producing largely unique works of art. We will be offering more important high quality Folk Art and pyrography works of art in the near future. We have been collecting and dealing in authentic American Folk Art and pyrography works of art for more than twenty five years. Our president has authored informative articles on collecting pyrography and has amassed a fine large collection which is now being deaccessioned. He personally inspects each antique work of art to ensure its old age, authenticity and quality condition. All works of art are guaranteed authentic and as described.
