This exquisite 27” x 27” Victorian Crazy Quilt, dating to the late 19th century, is a jewel-like example of America’s fascination with crazy quilting during the height of the Aesthetic Movement. Hand pieced from an assortment of silk velvets, silk satins, plush velvets, ribbons, novelty textiles, and fine cottons, every seam is lavishly embellished with hand embroidery, including feather stitch, herringbone, Cretan stitch, crossed stitches, buttonhole variations, spider-web motifs, floral sprays, and countless other decorative stitches.. Sequins, chenille, applied velvet medallions, and dimensional embroidery add further texture. The luxurious fabrics remain remarkably vibrant, displaying rich jewel tones of sapphire blue, ruby red, emerald green, amethyst, gold, ivory, black, and fuchsia. The variety of textiles reflects the Victorian custom of preserving treasured remnants from fashionable garments and household fabrics, transforming them into works of decorative art. Unlike traditional patchwork quilts designed primarily for warmth, crazy quilts celebrated artistic expression rather than geometric precision. Their asymmetrical compositions were inspired in part by Japanese aesthetics introduced to American audiences following the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition. By the 1880s, these quilts had become symbols of refinement, creativity, and exceptional needlework, often displayed prominently in Victorian parlors. The quilt is finished with a pale sage-green cotton backing that has been turned to the front and handstitched to form the binding.
