About the Item

Dating to approximately 1860–1870, this Sawtooth Framed Diamond Quilt with a unique Ohio Star border combines bold hand-pieced geometric design with fine hand quilting, resulting in a textile that is visually dramatic and exceptionally hand crafted. The quilt is composed of alternating framed diamonds set on point, each centered with brilliant aniline pink diamonds surrounded by crisp white framing and lively green corner accents. Narrow sawtooth pieced sashing creates a continuous lattice across the surface. And then there is the wonderful, highly unusual border, composed of alternating Ohio Stars and large green triangles that frame the composition. The fabrics retain outstanding, saturated color throughout. The vivid pinks—likely early aniline dyes introduced during the Civil War era—contrast dramatically against the creamy white ground and rich emerald greens. Equally impressive is the hand quilting. Every open setting square contains exquisitely stitched and elaborate feather wreaths, while triple diagonal crosshatching, echo quilting, and fine background quilting create remarkable texture across the entire surface. The quilting is exceptionally consistent and demonstrates the hand of a highly skilled maker. The back is ivory cotton while the binding is green cotton that has been handstitched to both sides. The cotton batting is lightweight. The quilt remains in outstanding antique condition with excellent color, crisp quilting definition, and a beautifully preserved original appearance, with some light toning spots on the front and back.
