About the Item

This is a striking example of late Victorian textile artistry in the form of a narrow Log Cabin parlor quilt (circa 1880-1900) embodying the richness of the Gilded Age aesthetic. Rather than a utilitarian bed covering, this well preserved textile was intentionally created as a decorative luxury piece for use as a table runner, mantel scarf, or architectural wall hanging. It features a meticulously pieced Log Cabin pattern arranged in a striking linear progression. Each block centers on a plush, jet-black square (the traditional "chimney" or hearth) before radiating outward into alternating light and dark "logs." The maker utilized an array of high-status textiles sourced from "best dress" remnants, millinery silks, and luxury furnishings of the era: Silks & Taffetas: Deep jewel tones, crisp taffetas, and ribbed silk failles that catch the light dynamically. Silk Velvets: Rich, light-absorbing black and dark-toned velvets that provide a heavy, dramatic contrast to the lighter logs. Brocades & Woven Ribbons: Select logs feature intricate Jacquard weaves, micro-checks, and striped menswear-inspired silks, showing off the vast textile variety available in the late 19th century. Measuring 16 inches by 64 inches, its elongated proportions are incredibly versatile for contemporary high-end interiors. Crucially, the runner retains its early, potentially original metal display rings mounted securely to the backing on one end. This allows for immediate, effortless vertical installation as a textile art piece, hanging flush and flat against a wall. The reverse is finished in its original clean, solid tan lining that stabilizes the entire piece. Authentic Antique Condition. This piece displays an honest patina in keeping with luxury silks of the late 19th century and some visible "shattering" (fragmentation) to a few isolated silk logs due to the historic metallic-salt weighting process used during the era. This degradation is localized, and the structural integrity of the runner remains excellent, stable, and ready for display.
