About the Item

Carved monkey vine walking stick by Vernon Edwards, with a wading bird-form handle and an incised VE monogram on the lower section. Edwards worked in Pooler, Georgia, and became known for walking sticks and sculptural carvings, including snakes, hands, figures, and related motifs. His work was featured in the Telfair Museum's Masters of the Walking Stick exhibition. 1 ½ inches wide by 40 inches tall. Good condition with age-related wear and expected handmade irregularities. from the Collection of John and Virginia Duncan, Savannah, GA

Folk art walking stick: The handle is made of carved deer horn depicting the head of a greyhound with sulphur glass eyes, the tongue extended between the incisors. The gilded silver collar and muzzle strap under the ears are chiseled with studs to simulate a leather muzzle collar. Hawthorn wood shaft. Metal ferrule. Designed by Manuel Orazi and made by Émile Saint-Yves for Maison Moderne, Paris, France, circa 1900.
