About the Item

This authentic Vintage American 1954–1964 Decommissioned Red STOP Sign is a rare mid-century relic of U.S. automotive history. Crafted from heavy-gauge enamel on steel, this 24" x 24" octagon weighs approximately 8.5 lbs, predating the shift to lightweight aluminum. The iconic octagon shape was standardized in 1923 to ensure drivers could identify the sign from the back, but the vibrant red color only became the national standard in 1954. Before this, stop signs were yellow because red paint of the era faded too quickly; the development of durable, fade-resistant porcelain enamel allowed for the high-visibility red we recognize today. This specific piece is a "first generation" red sign, dating between the 1954 MUTCD color mandate and the mid-1960s transition to aluminum. In very good vintage condition, it features a character-rich patina earned from decades of roadside service. The surface displays authentic general wear, staining, and minor splatter, along with scraping and localized areas of rust that highlight its heavy steel construction. Small areas of enamel loss add to its industrial charm, making it a perfect statement piece for collectors of Americana, transportation memorabilia, or mid-century industrial decor.
