About the Item

A 10-strand necklace hand-crafted from red-orange Naga beads from the early 20th century and strung with natural fibers. Necklaces such as these were a status symbol and an important item amidst women dowry. The beads are "Coral Glass" which were originally hand wound trade beads from China, made to resemble red coral and golden amber. These bright, rich, and stunningly coloured beads were traded among Naga people in Northern India and Burma. Given their desirability and rarity these beads became highly treasured by the Naga People.
