About the Item

A provocative late 20th century Kuba cloth panel with a bold zigzag and diamond pattern woven in black and natural cut pile raffia surrounding a tongue-in-cheek inscription reading, "100% POLYESTER." Kuba cloths are constructed of fine strips of raffia, knotted and cut, creating beautiful geometric patterns. Sometimes panels are stitched together to create long dance skirts worn by men during various ceremonies. This one is particularly special as it depicts the artist's humor, something not frequently found in tribal arts of this type.
