About the Item

Johannes Vermeer (1632 - 1675) painted many Dutch interiors in addition to his famous “Girl with a Pearl Earring”. In the painting ""The Art of Painting"" a beautiful golden chandelier is displayed above the painter and his subject. Dutch historians have noted that such chandeliers permitted artists to demonstrate their expertise at rendering shimmering and refractive brass under changing light conditions. A true testament to their craft and artistry. Exemplifying 19th century Dutch craftsmanship, the Vermeer 109 chandelier captures elegance with its single 70cm wide tier illuminated by 6 gracefully curving brass arms. Expertly formed from hollow brass, this antique lighting piece maintains a delicate profile at 57cm high. Intricately scrolled metalwork embellishes the circular frame, evoking the ornamental styles favored to brighten palaces and manors of the era. Though modeled centuries ago, this chandelier is modernly wired for use today. With its warmth and subtle grandeur, the golden-hued Vermeer 109 pendant honors Holland's renowned metalworking traditions. Original historical moulds from the era are utilised to create the brass components. Additionally, casting is still done the old-fashioned way in a greasy type of sand called Brussels’ soil. After the crown has been varnished, skilled artisans assemble the components. Electric crowns have bent hollow brass tubes for the arms. The arms and curls are soldered together. While the crowns are being put together, the electrical wiring and lighting components are covertly inserted. Brink & van Keulen, a family-owned business founded in 1946, upholds the art of casting by producing the highest calibre brass chandeliers. Chandeliers by Brink and van Keulen can be found in a number of prestigious churches and monumental buildings in the Netherlands and other parts of the world. Through the transmission of knowledge through many generations, Brink & van Keulen has substantially aided in the preservation of the Dutch yellow casting craft. The business is the sole manufacturer of chandeliers using original casting moulds from the 17th century in all of Europe.
