French Art Deco ceiling chandelier by Simonet Frères This exceptional chandelier by the Parisian manufacturer Simonet Frères impressively embodies the elegance and rigor of French Art Deco from the late 1920s and early 1930s. The long-established company Simonet Frères, located on Rue des Archives in Paris, specialized in high-quality lighting fixtures and finely crafted bronzes from the beginning of the 20th century. A particularly characteristic feature is the combination of metallic precision and artfully designed lampshades made of pressed and frosted glass. These shades were often created in collaboration with renowned artists of the time. The chandelier captivates with its architecturally structured design. Simple, vertically rising struts lend the light an almost cathedral-like effect. The stylized, upward-curving metal leaves mark the transition from functional object to sculptural form. This dynamic design is typical of the heyday of Art Deco, in which geometric clarity and decorative refinement merge into a harmonious whole. Spherical lampshades The six spherical lampshades made of finely textured, satin-finished pressed glass create a pleasantly diffused, warm light. This type of glass was a key design element in Parisian lighting design of the time and underscores the lamp’s luxurious yet modern character. The richly decorated central finial with its ornamental relief is particularly noteworthy. It lends the chandelier additional depth and elevates it far beyond purely functional illumination. The nickel- or silver-plated bronze provides the elegant coolness typical of high-quality French Art Deco lighting. History of the Simonet Frères Manufactory Simonet Frères is among the French lighting manufacturers that most convincingly represent the transition from the decorative arts of the 1920s to the mature design language of Art Deco. In the art market, the company is known as a French manufacturer and distributor of lamps and chandeliers from the 1920s and 1930s. Extant pieces are primarily made of brass, bronze, silver-plated bronze, and pressed, satin-finished, or patinated glass. Typical of Simonet Frères is the combination of technical precision and ornamental elegance. The metal fittings typically appear simple, clearly structured, and architectural. In contrast, the glass provides a softer, light-modulating counterpoint. This characteristic illustrates an important aspect of French Art Deco lighting around 1930: the focus shifted from the opulent, dynamic ornamentation of Art Nouveau to a controlled synthesis of geometry, material effects, and stylized natural forms. Simonet Frères and the sculptor Henri Dieupart The documented collaboration between Simonet Frères and the sculptor Henri Dieupart is particularly revealing. Market and object sources identify Dieupart as the designer of individual models. A rare veilleuse lamp from around 1930 explicitly mentions stylized lotus leaves and shell shapes as decoration. It is known that Dieupart collaborated with Albert Simonet on such Art Deco pieces, which were produced at the Cristallerie de Choisy-le-Roi. This connection is particularly interesting from an art historical perspective: Simonet Frères represents not only a lighting manufacturer but also a typical French network of publishers, designers, and glass producers. This was characteristic of the luxurious interior design of the interwar period. In Art Deco, the lamp became a total work of art, encompassing sculpture, architecture, and lighting design. Simonet Frères models, therefore, often do not merely provide functional lighting but are deliberately staged light sculptures. Stylistically, the spectrum ranges from floral stylization to strict cubic-architectural clarity. On the one hand, there are decorative glass forms with leaf or palm motifs. On the other hand, one finds economical, almost constructivist solutions, typical of the early 1930s. A chandelier documented on the market from around 1930 features twelve glass shades with palm motifs and a central shade with floral decoration. Another large model from around 1935 combines silvered bronze with frosted, molded glass. This range clearly demonstrates how Simonet Frères mediated between decorative refinement and modern functionalism within the Art Deco movement. From today’s perspective, Simonet Frères lighting fixtures are particularly significant because they exemplify the French taste for luxury during the interwar period.
