About the Item

A French Louis XVI Style Gilt Bronze and Cut Rock Crystal Multi-Light Chandelier. The chandelier is designed in a traditional cage form with candle-form lights arranged around a circular gilt bronze frame. The structure is suspended by linked gilt chains leading to a corona of scrolling bronze arms decorated with rock crystal flowerheads and drops. Each candle arm is adorned with strings of faceted beads and large teardrop-shaped rock crystal pendants of various sizes, complemented by diamond and spherical prisms. The overall composition is characterized by its dense arrangement of pendants and floral ornamentation. The gilt bronze frame is finely cast with scrolling branches and circular drip pans supporting each light. The arms are further draped with garlands of cut rock crystal beads connected to the central stem, which is constructed of alternating crystal baluster elements. The upper section of the chandelier features bronze branches terminating in additional rock crystal flowers and faceted drops, creating a tiered appearance. The chandelier terminates at the bottom with a large spherical rock crystal pendant that serves as a counterbalance to the elaborate upper design. Such chandeliers were among the most complex forms of lighting produced in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The combination of gilt bronze and cut rock crystal required collaboration between metalworkers and crystal cutters. The rock crystal, notable for its remarkable clarity and finely executed faceting, reflects materials of outstanding quality.
