About the Item

Large neo-Gothic stucco chandelier with old stone patina, depicting four large and four small gargoyles. The small gargoyles or chimeras at the top of the suspension are kneeling or crouching. The four large gargoyles are on the lower level of the ceiling pendant. The last four are winged. You'll notice that each of the eight gargoyles is unique. Each has different attitudes, characteristics and grimaces. In the mid-19th century, a major neo-gothic trend swept through Europe. It was reflected in painting (as in this chandelier) and literature. Faced with this ceiling pendant, we can't help but think of Victor Hugo's novel Notre-Dame de Paris, set largely in the famous Paris cathedral. The latter is filled with remarkable gargoyles, not one of which is alike. Apart from the natural patina, you'll notice a few traces of paint, which also tell the story of this chandelier in their own way. Last but not least, each piece of the chandelier (probably to facilitate assembly) is marked with unique traces reminiscent of the marks left by stonemasons in the Middle Ages. One of the top gargoyles has been broken off and glued back on in one of its “previous lives” (please see last photo). The chandelier is signed. The lampshades are made of pig's bladder, but they need changing. Good condition for its age Shipping: 62 / 45 / 45 cm 8.5 kg
