About the Item

One of a kind Murano glass chandelier, large in size, designed by Barovier & Toso. Made in the middle of the last century, it has a complex structure; it is configured on a central metal stem covered by blown glass, characteristic of the Murano artisan tradition. Its design is organized in several levels, three in this case. The two levels closest to the ceiling are decorative, as they have large pendant crystals oriented both upwards and downwards. These large crystals are reminiscent of the whip lines of Art Nouveau, thanks to the curves at their ends and their striated finish. From the lowest level, closest to the ground, emerge the ten arms or lights. These curved arms hold the points of light, which rest on glass shades with a fluted finish. The use of transparent glass and the staggered composition create a great visual impact; in addition, the details in silver metal contrast with the lightness of the glass. This is a design by the firm Barovier & Toso, which combines the tradition of Murano glass with a highly decorative, functional structure. There is an option to add 30 cm more height with more chain and another piece of glass to put on the ceiling. Murano glass and Barovier & Toso Venetian glass is the result of a fascinating combination of artisan tradition and sophisticated industrial techniques, combining manual dexterity with technological innovation. This fusion, which has lasted over the centuries, is the heart of the rich tradition of Italian glass. The famous Murano glass was born from a ban: although glass had already been made in Venice for centuries, in 1291, during the Republic of Venice, its production in the city was banned, to avoid fires caused by the high temperatures of the furnaces and to keep the art of glass secret, forcing all glassmakers to move to Murano and for production to take place exclusively there. In 1295, the historic company Barovier & Toso was founded, one of the oldest in the world. The Venetian glassmaking house Barovier & Toso is renowned for designing lighting for residences and palaces around the world, being admired for its dazzling style and exquisite craftsmanship. This excellence is rooted in an incomparable heritage: the first Barovier documented as a glass master in Murano dates back to a time when glassblowing was considered an “emerging art”. Since then, several members of the Barovier family have led the Murano glassmakers' guild, intertwining the history of their family with that of the craft. The most prominent member of the Barovier family is Angelo Barovier, a true Renaissance man, who in the 15th century invented crystalline, a glass of exceptional purity. His works are considered some of the greatest glass masterpieces ever created. Today, more than 20 generations later, the company continues to transmit this vast knowledge and artistic taste in each of its creations. Today, Barovier & Toso remains a prestigious firm, keeping alive family traditions and the knowledge accumulated over centuries. The legacy of the old masters remains a key reference. The company has a museum in the Palazzo Contarini in Venice, opened in 1995, where the work of Ercole Barovier and other glass masters is exhibited. Located close to the company's headquarters in Murano, the renovated Palazzo Barovier & Toso is much more than a museum: it is a quintessential Venetian experience, where you can see the stunning chandeliers and glassworks that have made Murano world famous. They also have a showroom in Singapore and Milan, the latter with a concept floor, and a boutique in Venice.
