About the Item

Introducing a rare, early "Eyeshade" floor lamp designed by the influential George Nelson for Koch & Lowy. Designed by and for architects this lamp is as versatile as it is aesthetically captivating. Abe to adjust from a minimum height of 38" to a maximum height of 56" this lamp features a swing arm shade that can swivel circularly in a 360 degree motion. The instantly recognizable, subtle green shade adds character and points directly to the great designer George Nelson. George Nelson was an American industrial designer and is considered the founder of American modernist design. Working extensively as an industrial designer, architect, author, editor, and teacher throughout his prolific career Nelson would go on to have perhaps the most successful and influential career in American design history. Most notably, Nelson served as the Director of Design for Herman Miller between the years of 1947 to 1972 launching or designing some of the most iconic pieces Herman Miller would ever produce. Koch & Lowy was a prominent American lighting company, founded by Ernest Lowy in 1946, celebrated for its innovative Mid-Century Modern and contemporary designs in chrome, brass, and lucite, producing iconic pieces like adjustable pharmacy lamps and collaborating with designers like George Nelson (such as the "Half Nelson" lamp) and Neal Small, eventually becoming a collectible brand after being sold in the 1990s. Designed by an architect for architects this incredibly versatile floor lamp stays where you put it and can articulate in all directions for easy lighting in any space. In 100% original, vintage condition and still 100% operable with no mechanical issues this lamp is ideal for designers and collectors alike searching for an authentic Nelson lighting piece that is ready to stand the test of time. Make it yours today. ---Dimensions--- Width: 36 in / 91.44 cm Depth: 10 in / 25.4 cm Height: 56 in / 142.24 cm This iconic "Eyeshade" floor lamp is in 100% original, vintage condition and has aged to perfection! The most visible signs of wear are mostly relegated to the steel base which shows scratches (shown in the detail photos provided). With that said the only other wear present is small surface scratches in the chrome neck and lamp handle (again shown in the detail photos provided). As purists we strive to keep our pieces in as original condition and possible. However we do offer restoration services and can have the base of this lamp painted, powder coated or refinished in a material that best suits your discretion. If this service interests you please message us prior to checkout to discuss options and pricing. The lamp head swivels easily 360 degrees, whilst the lamp neck rotates 360 degrees effortlessly. The lamp also adjusts to a max height of 56" and a lowest height of 38" and the lamp stays where you put it with no sagging or worn out bearings. The switch is operable and the lamp remains perfectly balanced even when the lamp is fully extended (36" max width). This instantly recognizable floor lamp is highly functional, structurally sound and ready for a literal lifetime more of use. Please view all photos and demonstration video for details on this lamp's current condition. We're limited on the amount of media we can post so additional photos and videos are available upon request.
