Aluminum beams with industrial rivets and steel triangle base. This pair of Sonneman "Echoes of Vienna" torchiere floor lamps sits at an interesting intersection in American design history. By 1987 Postmodern and Memphis design had made geometric pattern and historical reference newly acceptable in contemporary furniture and lighting, and designers like Sonneman were working in that climate while drawing on deeper sources. In this case the Wiener Werkstätte, whose influence on modernism ran from architecture through furniture and decorative objects in the early twentieth century. The lamps are well-constructed: three pairs of aluminum beams with industrial rivets, triangular steel bases, wide glass shades behind perforated mesh screens with ball finials. Both are dimmable. The torchiere bounce produces warm ambient light rather than direct illumination. Robert Sonneman began his career in the 1960s and became one of the more prolific American lighting designers of the following two decades, known for work that sat between industrial process and decorative ambition. George Kovacs founded his eponymous New York lighting company in 1968, building it into one of the primary American distributors of design-forward lighting through the 1970s and 1980s. The Sonneman collaboration was among its most recognized. Sold individually.
