About the Item

A great pair of antique silver-plated sconces with hanging tassels and thumb switches by Edward F. Caldwell & Co. a premier designer of electric light fixtures. Edward F. Caldwell & Co., of New York City, was one of the premier designers and manufacturers of electric light fixtures and decorative metalwork from the late 19th to the mid-20th centuries. Founded in 1895 by Edward F. Caldwell (1851–1914) and Victor F. von Lossberg (1853–1942), the firm left a legacy of custom designed and finely-made, metal gates, lanterns, chandeliers, ceiling and wall fixtures, floor and table lamps, and other decorative objects. The sconces exhibit Georgian or Neoclassical design influences, popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and typically date to the 1920s. They are crafted from a base metal, often bronze or brass, with an original silver-plated finish. The silver finish shows some natural wear consistent with age. The backplate features detailed ornamental work, an urn-shaped body, and two elegantly scrolled arms to hold the candle lights. They include a decorative hanging tassel at the base. Overall in great condition, need a good cleaning and polishing a great pair.
