About the Item

A fine pair of Karl Springer style Mid-Century Modern polished brass & lucite "Purcell" sconces, each sconce wired with two candelabra sockets. These iconic and dramatic sconces were designed by Karl Springer- one of the most important and influential designers of the 20th century- in America circa 1970. They feature a polished brass demilune top with bowed sides. Streamlined and illuminated lucite embellishments of staggered heights and depths descend from the shade creating an iconically Art Deco skyscraper motif. Karl Springer was celebrated for reviving Classic Art Deco designs and updating them for a modern audience, making them relevant once again. These sconces are an iconic and timelessly elegant example of his practice that appear as au courant today as when they were realized nearly forty years ago. With their clean modernist lines and materials, these sconces are as versatile as they are aesthetically appealing, blending perfectly with any style of interior from Classic Mid-Century Modern to contemporary.
