About the Item

A sumptuous pair of wall sconces in gilt bronze and alabaster, designed in the decorative idiom of the French Art Deco masters Louis Süe and André Mare (Sue et Mare). Each sconce is composed of a half-moon alabaster shade — its warm, honey-toned veining glowing beautifully when lit — set within a fluted, fan-shaped bronze mount. The bronze is richly cast and chased with a lush, naturalistic garland of flowers and trailing leaves that swags across the base and climbs up either side of the shade, a hallmark of the exuberant, neo-classically inflected floral ornament that Süe and Mare brought to French decorative arts in the 1920s. The gilt bronze is finished with a warm, aged patina, and the alabaster diffuses a soft, ambient glow, casting gentle light both up toward the ceiling and out into the room — a favored lighting effect of the period. Substantial in scale and lavish in detailing, this pair would make a strong statement flanking a fireplace, staircase, or entry hall, and reads beautifully both illuminated and unlit thanks to the sculptural quality of the floral bronze work. About the Style: Sue et Mare Louis Süe (1875-1968) and André Mare (1885-1932) were among the most influential designers of the French Art Deco period. In 1919 they founded the Compagnie des Arts Français, a design and decorating firm that brought together architects, painters, sculptors, and craftsmen to create richly decorated, unified interior schemes for a wealthy Parisian clientele. Their work is distinguished by a deliberate return to opulent, curvilinear ornament — voluptuous floral garlands, baskets of flowers, ribboned swags, and classically inspired forms — set in dialogue with the bold geometry and luxurious materials associated with Art Deco. Süe et Mare furniture and lighting frequently combined gilt bronze with alabaster, marble, and fine woods, favoring an opulent, almost Baroque exuberance that stood in contrast to the more austere geometric strand of Art Deco design championed by contemporaries. Their decorative vocabulary — abundant floral swags, fluted and gadrooned forms, and a taste for gilt bronze mounts — became widely influential and was echoed by numerous French ateliers producing lighting and furniture in a similar spirit through the interwar decades. This pair of sconces, with its cascading floral garland and fan-form alabaster shade, sits firmly within that decorative tradition.

Art Deco Wall Sconces by Paul Kiss, Alabaster & Wrought Iron, 1925

Art Deco Wall Sconces by Paul Kiss, Alabaster & Wrought Iron, 1925

By Paul Kiss

Located in Miami, FL

Pair of French Art Deco wall sconces by Paul Kiss, circa 1925, combining carved alabaster bowls with exuberant wrought‑iron scrollwork. The deep, half‑moon alabaster shades flare gently at the rim and show dramatic veining that glows warmly when lit, giving a soft, diffuse light typical of Kiss’s use of stone.
Each bowl is cradled in a black patinated iron bracket composed of tight volutes and overlapping spirals, the lower section forming a stylized finial that anchors the composition and showcases the designer’s virtuoso fer‑forgé Paul Kiss was a Hungarian-born master of wrought iron who became one of the leading metalworkers of the French Art Deco movement in Paris during the 1920s and 1930s. In Paris he trained and worked with the great ironworkers Edgar Brandt and Raymond Subes, absorbing their technical refinement before opening his own atelier and showroom in the rue Léon-Delhomme after the First World War. Kiss specialised in hand‑forged iron furniture...

Rare, stylish and great quality pair of antique alabaster wall sconces. This beautiful quality and impressive pair of gilt bronze and alabaster sconces truly is a rare find. These rare, all-handcrafted and handsome lights come with detailed and stunning, gilt bronze ram's head sculptures on either side and a grape-bunch finial at the bottom. These elements ofcourse all have a deeper, symbolic meaning to them which also makes these lights great conversation pieces. These unique wall fixtures date from circa 1910 and they will change the look and feel of an entrance or hallway or any living room like no modern lights ever could. We could mention many more places where these lights will bring class and joy, but we are certain that you and our designer clients don't need our 'advise' for that. Especially with the lights on these white alabaster shades with their organic, natural veins create a calm and pleasant atmosphere that is second to none. These handcrafted and fabulous sconces...
