About the Item

Pair of French Louis XVI Dore Bronze Patinated 2-Light Sconces, attributed to Théodore Millet Each wall sconce is organized around a vertical, scepter-like shaft finished with a dark patinated surface and mounted with doré bronze ornament. The shaft is surmounted by an pinecone-form finial above a molded collar. Two candle arms extend symmetrically from the central section, each terminating in a cylindrical candle nozzle set above a circular drip pan with beaded edging. The arms are formed as twisted fluted branches and are supported by sculptural goat heads with curved horns and elongated necks, projecting outward from the central structure. Beneath the arms, a female mask modeled as Medusa forms the junction point, with stylized hair arranged in radiating locks. At the lower section, the shaft tapers to a pointed terminal enriched with applied foliate mounts. Additional decorative elements include circular wreaths enclosing bird figures positioned along each arm. The birds are shown in profile, perched on clusters of fruit and leaves, enclosed within rope-twist rings with leaf tips and trailing ends. The goat heads display finely defined facial features, textured coats, and ridged horns. The Medusa mask is rendered with smooth facial planes and symmetrical features, framed by scrolling hair that merges into the surrounding mounts. The doré bronze surfaces contrast with the darker patinated ground, emphasizing the layered construction and relief casting throughout. The sconces are attributed to Théodore Millet, a Parisian bronzier active during the second half of the nineteenth century, known for producing refined neoclassical lighting and decorative mounts for elite interiors. Millet operated a respected workshop supplying both private and official commissions, with work documented in international exhibitions. The casting and finishing of these sconces reflect workshop practices associated with his production, including precise chasing, crisp mold definition, and controlled gilding. The overall construction shows careful assembly of multiple cast elements, consistent surface treatment, and balanced proportions characteristic of high quality French decorative bronze work. B
