About the Item

An exceptional set of four "Sigma" ceiling or wall lights designed by Sergio Mazza for Artemide in the 1960s, among the most iconic and enduring expressions of Italian modernist lighting. Combining geometric purity with outstanding material quality, the Sigma perfectly embodies Mazza's philosophy of reducing form to its essentials while achieving maximum visual impact through light, proportion, and craftsmanship. Each fixture features a beautifully molded pressed-glass diffuser, distinguished by a finely textured radial pattern that transforms the emitted light into a soft, atmospheric glow. Once illuminated, the glass reveals a mesmerizing sunburst effect that changes continuously according to the viewing angle, creating remarkable depth despite the fixture's restrained geometry. The diffusers are framed by elegant rings in nickel-plated brass, whose refined finish beautifully complements the luminous quality of the glass. Four exposed cylindrical retaining pins subtly articulate the perimeter, becoming an unmistakable design signature while expressing the honesty of the fixture's construction. Designed as highly versatile luminaires, the Sigma can be installed either as ceiling lights or as wall sconces, allowing countless architectural compositions. As a complete set of four, they become particularly compelling: they may be arranged in a perfectly symmetrical grid, aligned along a corridor, installed in pairs within the same room, or distributed throughout an interior to establish a coherent visual language. Their understated elegance allows them to blend seamlessly into both historic and contemporary environments while maintaining a strong sculptural presence. Even when switched off, the four fixtures read as a minimalist composition of circular forms. Once illuminated, they animate the surrounding architecture with soft reflected light and the distinctive optical texture of Sergio Mazza's pressed-glass design. All four examples are preserved in excellent vintage condition. The molded glass diffusers remain beautifully preserved, while the nickel-plated brass frames display a delicate natural patina consistent with age, enhancing their authenticity and collectible appeal. An increasingly difficult set to assemble, representing one of Artemide's most celebrated early lighting designs and an outstanding opportunity for collectors of twentieth-century Italian design. The fixtures are preserved in excellent vintage condition with a beautiful age-related patina to the nickel-plated brass and only minor signs of use consistent with their age. We recommend professional rewiring for safe operation and compliance with contemporary local electrical standards.

Pair of Large Version “Gamma” Wall Sconces by Sergio Mazza for Artemide, 1960s

Pair of Large Version “Gamma” Wall Sconces by Sergio Mazza for Artemide, 1960s

By Sergio Mazza, Artemide

Located in Brescia, Brescia

An exceptional pair of wall sconces from the iconic "Gamma" series, designed by Sergio Mazza for Artemide in the 1960s. This is the largest and most desirable version of the model, measuring approximately 27 cm in diameter, 38 cm deep, and 20 cm high, offering a more substantial architectural presence than the smaller variants commonly encountered on the market. The design perfectly reflects Sergio Mazza’s mastery of geometric form and material balance. Each fixture is composed of a large spherical diffuser in finely ribbed pressed glass, enclosed by a sculptural brushed nickel-plated brass structure that wraps elegantly around the globe, creating a striking interplay between transparency, texture, and metal. When illuminated, the radial pattern embedded within the glass becomes particularly evident, diffusing light evenly while producing a soft, atmospheric glow. The substantial dimensions and balanced proportions allow these sconces to function not only as lighting fixtures but also as sculptural wall elements. What makes this pair especially remarkable is its condition and provenance. These sconces come from a rare old stock acquisition and have never been installed or used. As shown in the photographs, they are still preserved in their original Artemide bags, an increasingly rare circumstance for lighting produced over half a century ago. The brushed nickel-plated brass surfaces retain their original finish, while the pressed glass diffusers remain beautifully preserved. The overall presentation is exceptionally crisp, displaying the freshness and integrity normally associated with contemporary production rather than vintage pieces. Designed by Sergio Mazza during Artemide’s formative years, the Gamma series represents one of the earliest expressions of the company's commitment to combining technical innovation with refined Italian modernism. Today these models are increasingly sought after by collectors, architects, and design enthusiasts for their timeless aesthetic and versatility. Presented in outstanding New Old Stock condition, complete with original Artemide packaging. A rare opportunity to acquire an unused pair of the largest Gamma wall sconces...
