About the Item

Wall or ceiling lamps velella mod. designed by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for Flos, 1967. White opaline glass shade, painted metal stand, first production in excellent condition, 2 light points, neon and chrome incandescent bulb. The lamps have been serviced by a professional, fully functional. .Velella is a mixed light lamp, incandescent and fluorescent. A white opal glass diffuser (diameter 40 cm ) is attached by a chrome-plated ring nut to a lacquered metal top for ceiling or wall mounting. Attached to the latter are three brackets for attaching the fluorescent lamp; in the center, however, is the lamp holder for the silver-domed incandescent source. The 'device provides a' lighting: white light, diffused in all directions. Achille Castiglioni was born in Milan on February 16, 1918 and graduated in Architecture in 1944. Since 1940 he has been experimenting on industrial product together with his brothers Livio (1911-1979) and Pier Giacomo (1913-1968). After graduating in Architecture in 1944, he initiated research into new forms, techniques and materials, tending toward the realization of an integral design process. From 1945 to 1962 he carried out the design activity together with his brother Pier Giacomo at the studio in C.so di Porta Nuova 57, in 1962 due to demolition of the building the studio was transferred to P.zza Castello 27 (MI) where he continued the collaboration with Pier Giacomo until his death in 1968, from 1968 to 2002, the year of Achille's death, he continued the activity always in the studio in P.zza Castello alone. He attained at the Ministry of Education in 1969 the Libera Docenza in "Artistic Design for Industry" and held the Chair at the Faculty of Architecture in Turin until 1980 and then in Milan until 1993 as full professor of "Industrial Design." He has since 1950 implemented experiments and research in the creation of exhibition layouts (Milan Triennale, Montecatini, Agip, RAI). In 1956 he was among the founders of ADI. Fourteen of his works are featured at MoMA in New York. For these ed other pieces iconic Italian design follow our SECOND YOUTH gallery. We offer custom research and restoration services.
