About the Item

An elegant and substantial French oil lamp dating probably to the late 19th century, executed in onyx, bronze, and molded crystal glass. The lamp features a classical architectural form centered around a turned green onyx column mounted on a finely cast gilt bronze base with neoclassical ornament. Above sits the original molded crystal reservoir with a richly detailed bronze burner assembly and tall glass chimney. Pieces of this type were created for refined bourgeois and aristocratic interiors during the second half of the 19th century, when decorative oil lamps served both as functional lighting and luxury decorative objects within salons, libraries, and reception rooms. The contrast between translucent onyx, clear crystal, and warm gilt bronze creates a sophisticated visual balance characteristic of high-quality French decorative arts of the period. The crystal reservoir displays deeply molded vertical decoration and retains strong clarity. The bronze mounts present fine chased details throughout, while the onyx column shows attractive natural veining in green, honey, and pale amber tones. Attribution remains stylistic, as no visible maker’s mark has been identified. Period: Probably 1870–1890 Origin: France Material: Onyx, crystal glass, bronze Type: Oil lamp Dimensions: Overall height with chimney: 78 cm / 30.7 in Height without chimney: 58 cm / 22.8 in Crystal reservoir diameter: 16 cm / 6.2 in Base width: 16.3 cm / 6.4 in Condition: Good antique condition overall consistent with age and use. Small chip and natural imperfections present near the lower area of the onyx column/base, visible in close-up photographs. Minor surface wear, oxidation, and age-related marks to the bronze elements. Burner mechanism requires a wick and has not been recently tested for prolonged operation. Glass chimney preserved. (The photographs form an integral part of the description.)
