About the Item

French Art Deco Swiveling Table Lamp by Jacques Adnet, circa 1940. Exceptional French Art Deco table or desk lamp designed by Jacques Adnet, France, circa 1940. Crafted in brass and glass, this refined modernist lamp exemplifies Adnet’s elegant and functional design approach. The lamp features a swiveling hemispherical brass shade with an original granite-like green painted finish, allowing for adjustable lighting. The paint is entirely original. It rests on a round gilded brass base, with a central brass element painted to match the shade. The vertical structure is composed of four rectangular gilded brass rods, supporting a distinctive decorative “skirt” formed by four brass elements, also finished in the same granite-effect green paint. The lamp retains its original glass reflector, enhancing both authenticity and light diffusion. Dimensions: Height: 16.7 in (42.5 cm) Diameter: 11.2 in (28.5 cm) Condition: Very good vintage condition. The brass shade shows minor paint losses consistent with age (see photos). Professionally rewired Delivered ready for use in US, EU, Australia, or other countries LED bulbs compatible A rare and sculptural example of French Modernist lighting, perfect for collectors of Art Deco, mid-century modern, or Jacques Adnet design. Jacques Adnet was one of the most influential French Art Deco and Modernist furniture designers of the 20th century. Renowned for his avant-garde vision, Adnet was among the first designers to fully integrate metal and glass into the structure and decoration of furniture, redefining modern luxury. Born in 1900 near Burgundy, Adnet studied at the Municipal School of Design in Auxerre and later at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, where he trained in architecture. After graduating, he founded J.J. Adnet with his twin brother Jean. His talent quickly gained recognition at the 1925 Salon d’Automne and the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs, establishing him as one of France’s most promising young designers. In 1928, at just 28 years old, Adnet became Director of La Compagnie des Arts Français (CAF), founded by Sue et Mare in 1919. This role provided him with an ideal platform to promote his modernist philosophy, characterized by precious woods, chromed metals, leather, parchment, mirrors, smoked glass, and rigorously streamlined forms with minimal ornamentation. Adnet famously summarized his aesthetic with the phrase: “What a lot of work to achieve simplicity.” After World War II, Adnet served as President of the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs (1947–1949) and received numerous prestigious commissions. These included the decoration of the private apartments of the French President at the Élysée Palace, the Château de Rambouillet, and the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, as well as luxury ocean liners such as the Ferdinand de Lesseps (1952). During the 1950s, Adnet collaborated with Hermès, creating iconic leather-clad furniture that remains highly sought after today. His collaborators and contemporaries included Charlotte Perriand, Serge Mouille, Francis Jourdain, Alexandre Noll, and Georges Jouve. In 1959, Adnet left CAF to become Director of the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, a position he held until 1970. He continued to influence generations of designers until his death in 1984. As art critic Louis Chéronnet wrote in Art et Industrie: “Adnet is among the first to expect metal and glass to integrate with the structure and decoration of furniture, complementing open spaces and bare surfaces with the sparkle and effects of electricity.” Today, Jacques Adnet’s work remains timeless, embodying a modern elegance that still feels remarkably contemporary.
