About the Item

Clearly inspired by the charismatic presence of Carmen Miranda on the stage and screen, with her vividly-colored dress topped with a hat overflowing with tropical fruit, this 1940s table lamp is graced with an stylized female figure capped with an abundance of fruit. The artist was Andrew Szoeke, who was admired in his day as one of the great graphic artists of America, putting his mastery of form and silhouette to work in furniture, type design, graphic design and Fine arts. His artisanry reached its peak in his elaborate furniture and decorative objects which featured his tour de force wood inlay, as here. One can detect burled maple, walnut, mahogany and exotic woods in various shades of blonde, reddish brown and blackish brown. The lamp base is an oblong form, surmounted by an accordian-form cylindrical final, with the lamp pole rising above. (Dimensions are for wood lamp base; with lamp pole, the piece is 21.25 inches high.)

"Dancers w/ Veils", Art Deco Lamp w/ Nude Female Figures, Unique Wire Mesh Shade

By Reuben Haley, Muncie Pottery

Located in Philadelphia, PA

This bold and vivid lamp from the late 1920s captures a phenomenon that started in the late 19th century and continued into the Art Deco period -- female figures dancing with flowing veils and fluttering fabrics. Loïe Fuller began the trend in the 1890s and early 1900s, and later Ruth St. Denis danced with veils and diaphanous fabrics in America. Here, the body of the lamp -- produced by Muncie pottery...

"Exchange of Cultures, " High Style Art Deco Porcelain Lamp Base w/ Nudes by Robj

By ROBJ

Located in Philadelphia, PA

Illustrated in "Ceramiche Robj" and considered a major design by the renowned sculptor and ceramicist, this large piece was probably made in early 1930s to coincide with the debut of the Exposition Coloniale Internationale in Paris, which attracted almost 9 million visitors in less than a year. Rare and striking, this porcelain table lamp base depicts the globe surmounted by a tightly composed cluster of nude and semi-nude female figures representing cultures around the world. The women depicted here, all glazed in a gorgeous snow-white glaze highlighted in gold, are clearly representing a range of nations in Asia and Africa, probably coinciding with the nations that were part of the French Colonial Empire in the 1930s, before they won their freedom. Much like the one surviving building from the Exposition, now the Cité nationale de l'histoire de l'immigration, which features a massive bas relief mural...
