About the Item

Sun, glazed white ceramic H 44 cm W 24 cm This piece was created by Georges Pelletier in the 1960s. It is his first sun sculpture without the rays, which he would incorporate later in his career. This piece had not been available for 50 years, so his son, Benjamin Pelletier, decided to reproduce it as part of the Made Of Light exhibition at Galeria Tambien in Ibiza, for which Benjamin Pelletier selected pieces that had not been produced since the 1960s to recreate them himself as a tribute to his father. Made of Light, an exhibition led by Benjamin Pelletier based on the archives of his father, artist and ceramicist Georges Pelletier. The works on view originate from a body of projects conceived by Georges Pelletier between the 1960s and the 1980s. Drawings, formal studies, prototypes, bisque pieces and works produced in very small numbers form the core of this selection. Some were never realized at the time; others were made in only one or two examples, despite their remarkable creative strength. Benjamin Pelletier revisited these archives with a focused and committed eye, selecting projects he chose to produce specifically for this exhibition, in the family workshop and using the original techniques. Made of Light thus brings forward a key corpus within Georges Pelletier’s work: his sculptural lamps, in which light moves freely through the material. The exhibition also takes the form of a discreet and deeply living tribute. By returning to his father’s archives, Benjamin Pelletier continues a conversation that began in the workshop—made of transmitted gestures, patience, and a sustained attention to light. Here, transmission does not freeze memory; it keeps it in motion. While Georges Pelletier gained wide recognition—from the 1960s through the 2000s—for his ceramic lamps, a more experimental and less widely circulated part of his practice developed in parallel. These are his sculptural lamps: autonomous, sculptural forms that integrate the light source directly inside the ceramic body. Light travels through channels, perforations, and voids, turning the material into a true conductor of light. In 2020, Georges Pelletier’s exhibition at Galeria Tambien marked a decisive turning point: for the first time, this corpus of sculptural lamps was foregrounded, revealing the deeply sculptural and visionary dimension of his work to an international audience. Made of Light follows directly from this rediscovery. Drawing on his father’s archives, Benjamin Pelletier selected emblematic projects he chose to produce today, in keeping with the original gestures, techniques, and spirit. Through this work of selection and production, he enables these works—long held as projects or rare pieces—to take on a fully realized form and a renewed presence today.
