About the Item

An exceptional Chinese export hard-paste porcelain table lamp, circa 1900. Thrown and hand-decorated in the highly sought-after Imari palette, the piece showcases a masterfully executed multi-firing technique: dense underglaze cobalt blue foliate grounds frame vivid overglaze iron-red figurative reserves accented with delicate hand-gilding. Fitted with brass hardware, this piece represents the pinnacle of turn-of-the-century Sino-Japanese export art. The main shield-shaped reserve panels feature an exquisitely detailed, hand-painted figurative scene celebrating the Japonisme movement that swept Western high society at the turn of the century. The scene captures three elegant Japanese bijin (beauties or geishas) dressed in flowing, intricately patterned ceremonial kimonos, their hair meticulously coiffed with traditional kanzashi pins. They are depicted enjoying a spring afternoon strolling past a garden pavilion, surrounded by blossoming cherry branches. The composition is masterfully framed by a heavy, hand-gilded scrolled border, creating a window into a romanticized East Asian landscape that directly contrasted and complemented the industrial era in which it was exported. The underside of the porcelain vessel features a crisp, hand-painted red four-character square mark reading '乾隆年制' (Qianlong Nian Zhi). While this translates directly to 'Made during the Reign of the Qianlong Emperor' (who ruled China from 1735 to 1796), this is a classic apocryphal mark rather than a period imperial piece. Highly common among late-Qing and early-Republic export workshops operating circa 1900, these marks were utilized as a profound sign of reverence for the golden era of Chinese ceramic artistry, functioning as a stamp of high quality and prestige for the Western market.
