About the Item

Neoclassical Bronze Table Lamp by M.G. Bindesbøll, Denmark, ca. 1850 Of candlestick form in patinated bronze, the slender reeded column with acanthus collar and capital rising from a trefoil base with three winged paw feet and foliate ornament, the whole with a warm golden patina acquired over time. The tripod base with winged paw feet drawn directly from Pompeian prototypes encountered by Bindesbøll during his four years of intensive study in Greece and Italy, a compositional type that informed his entire approach to decorative form. Designed by Michael Gottlieb Bindesbøll (1800–1856), architect of Thorvaldsens Museum and one of the most original minds of the Danish Golden Age, whose deep engagement with classical antiquity gave his work a directness and authority that set it apart from the historicist imitation characteristic of the period. A lamp of this type is depicted in the interior of Thorvaldsens Museum in the literature, confirming both the design’s attribution and its original institutional context. Sold without shade. Measurements: Height: 70 cm (27.6 in) Width: 29 cm (11.4 in) Depth: 29 cm (11.4 in) The lamp is in good original condition with naturally developed patina throughout. Literature: Peter Thule Kristensen, Gottlieb Bindesbøll: Denmark’s First Modern Architect, Arkitektens Forlag, Copenhagen, 2013.
