About the Item

RARE “Round Travertine Elephant Table Lamp” by Fratelli Mannelli, circa 1965–1975, ITALY, The Large Model + We are also throwing in the small elephant sculpture to go alongside this beauty : ) PERFECT for a baby's room : ) or for a lover of Vintage Mid Century Collectible Italian Design and Elephants! Stunning Solid Travertine Round body featuring the circular form with flat sides, Cream/beige layers of natural Italian travertine. Featuring Carved elephant features, and a semicircular cut-out for the legs at the bottom, and a small drilled circular eye. A vertical carved line representing the head/ear separation. The depth and profile of this is part of the collection of the heavier, earlier Mannelli versions (not the later, thinner copies that appeared in the 1980s). Featuring an original brass stem, and lampshade with a neutral shape and Linen textile texture. Fratelli Mannelli was an Italian design/manufacturing atelier that were active notably in the mid-20th century and are best known for creating refined, sculptural furniture and decorative objects. Their works were sometimes exhibited internationally, e.g. at design fairs such as the Triennale di Milano and other exhibitions, which speaks to their recognition in the design community. A representative example of their design lineage is the “elephant” table lamp, typically made from travertine stone (a form of limestone), often with a stylized elephant base. It combines sculptural form — functioning as an art piece — with utility, as a lighting object. Most of the surviving examples are referred to as “vintage” today — these are not modern reproductions (at least when provenance is properly documented). The carved elephant base is not just a "novelty" — it reflects a craft tradition blending sculpture and functional design. The natural marbling and veining of travertine contribute to each piece’s uniqueness. Because of the heaviness and the material, many of these lamps were (originally) quite substantial pieces compared to typical table lamps — some examples note significant weight and tactile quality. The lamps are considered desirable by collectors of mid-century design and vintage Italian decorative objects — partly because combining natural stone and animal-form sculpture is fairly unusual. While in the early decades (1920s–30s) Fratelli Mannelli seems to have been more known for Art Deco-style furniture with bold geometric forms, by the mid-20th century their work (including lamps) had shifted toward a different aesthetic — more organic, material-driven, and often playful or decorative (e.g. animal shapes). The elephant lamp is a good example of how mid-century Italian design could marry craftsmanship (stone carving) with industrial-era home décor and modern sensibilities — something that appeals strongly to collectors of “vintage Italian modern.”
