About the Item

Striking pair of studio-made ceramic table lamps by Casual Lamps of California, each built around a generous, drum-round body that reads as much like sculpture as it does lighting. The form is a study in contrast: a high-gloss, deep umber glaze sweeps over the slender neck and tapers down into the body, framing a wide, matte bisque field that has been deeply incised and hand-tooled with a stylized bird in profile, its plumage rendered in a warm, burnished terracotta red against a finely cross-hatched ground. Radiating chrysanthemum blossoms, trailing leaves, and feathered grasses fill out the composition, each petal and blade individually carved rather than pressed or stamped — the kind of patient, additive surface work that signals real studio craftsmanship rather than a production shortcut. What makes this pair special is the level of hand work on view. No two passages of the sgraffito carving are quite identical between the two lamps, and the saturation of the red glaze shifts subtly across the bird's body, the natural result of hand-applied pigment over a hand-built form. The result is a pair that is unmistakably matched in design and scale, yet each one is a one-of-a-kind object in its own right — exactly the kind of quiet variation that's prized in vintage studio pottery and almost impossible to find today. Stylistically, the lamps sit at a wonderful crossroads — the bold, graphic bird motif and earthy red-and-tan palette nod to Southwestern and pre-Columbian textile and pottery traditions, while the rounded, oversized silhouette and glossy dark glaze are pure 1970s California design. That combination gives them tremendous range: they read equally well in a richly layered bohemian interior, a warm modernist or mid-century room, a Southwestern or Spanish Revival house, or as a grounding, textural counterpoint in an otherwise pared-back contemporary space. Scaled generously and substantial in the hand, they're built to anchor a console, sideboard, or pair of nightstands rather than disappear into the background. Both lamps retain their original brass three-way sockets and harps and are wired and ready for shades. Sold as a true pair — a configuration that's increasingly hard to source in this size, this condition, and with this much hand-carved detail intact. Americana, Mid-Century, Hollywood Regency, Art Deco, Eclectic, Coastal, Modern, Boho, Organic Modern, Minimalist, Scandinavian, Danish, Danish Modern
