About the Item

Swedish grace table lamp produced in Västerås, Sweden in 1931. Made from pewter with brass details. Lamp fitting with original turn light switch. Lovely flower shaped decor on the base and austere white chintz lamp shade. Very good vintage condition with few signs of age related wear and patina. Swedish Grace is a style trend in Swedish design and crafts from the 1920s. The design language, which is found on, for example, furniture, glass and porcelain, is characterized by austere elegance, created through superficial decoration on simple shapes with smooth surfaces. The objects were often made of exclusive materials and in complicated techniques that required skilled craftsmen. The architecture from the same period is usually called Nordic Classicism. The term Swedish Grace was coined by the English architecture critic Philip Morton Shand when he reviewed the modernist Stockholm Exhibition of 1930 in The Architectural Review and stated that the explanation for Sweden being able to establish itself so quickly and successfully as a design nation during the 1920s was the sense for artistic quality and grace. Two events were crucial to the development of Swedish Grace: first, several lavish public buildings were built during the 1920s, and second, many architects and artists began to design objects for industrial production. When Stockholm City Hall was to be decorated for its inauguration in 1923, some of the period's leading artists and designers were hired by architect Ragnar Östberg to create a work of art, i.e. spaces where every detail had been specially designed specifically for their location. Other lavish buildings with the same ambition were the Skandia cinema (1923) and Stockholm City Library (1928), both by Gunnar Asplund, as well as the Stockholm Concert Hall (1926) and the Match Palace (1928), both by Ivar Tengbom. The large, prestigious buildings led to an increased demand for newly designed furniture, lighting fixtures and textiles; this became a catalyst for Swedish Grace. At the same time, industrial art companies such as Orrefors Glasbruk and Näfveqvarns Bruk hired designers to renew their ranges.
