About the Item

French Mid-Century Modern travertine and chrome table lamp attributed to Philippe Barbier for Maison Barbier, Paris, circa 1970 with a new drum shade. Can be fitted with US or international plug of your choice. This lamp retains its original European B22 bayonet socket. B22 LED bulbs are readily available in the US. Philippe Barbier's travertine lamps are among the most recognizable objects of 1970s Parisian interior design — present on French film sets, in the apartments of the period, and now in the collections of buyers who know that the decade produced some of France's most assured decorative work. This example is characteristic: a solid cylindrical travertine column at the base, a travertine sphere at mid-height, the two stone elements joined and articulated by mirror-polished chrome fittings — a slender turned form at the neck, a crisp collar at the junction of column and sphere. The travertine is warm beige-cream throughout, its natural voids, pitting, and linear veining reading clearly against the bright chrome. The contrast is the point: raw geological material and industrial precision in exact balance. About Philippe Barbier Philippe Barbier was a Paris-based furniture and lighting designer active throughout the 1960s and 1970s. From Maison Barbier on rue du Pré aux Clercs, he produced work combining polished chrome and nickel with travertine and stone — a material language that became synonymous with a refined strain of French modernism. His lamps appeared on the sets of several French films from 1974 onward. Maison Barbier was also the first to distribute Henry Massonnet's iconic 1968 Tam-Tam stool.
