About the Item

Vintage Hollywood Regency and Palm Beach style table lamp in sculptural glossy-white Manises Mediterranean ceramic, circa 1960-1970s, modeled in trompe-l'œil faux rattan with an easy coastal character, on an ebonized wood base. Paired with a new hand woven natural jute shade and a new brass fitting. New fitting and newly wired for U.S. use. International plug customization available at no charge. Height includes lampshade. The base is white-glazed ceramic worked in relief to resemble braided rattan — rows of coiled, rope-like cording wrapping a rounded, basket-like body, a convincing trompe-l'œil of natural fiber in hard ceramic. It sits on a turned ebonized wood foot. This reflects the broader mid-century Spanish interest in natural materials translated into ceramic. The result is unmistakably coastal and Mediterranean in spirit, with a hand-made warmth that reads Bohemian and Organic Modern as easily as Old Florida. Condition is very good, with minor wear to the ebonized wood base consistent with age. The new handwoven jute shade picks up the texture of the base in real natural fiber, soft and warm in tone. About Manises: The ceramics of Manises, a town near Valencia in eastern Spain, have been produced continuously since the fourteenth century. Its medieval tin-glazed earthenware and metallic lustreware were exported across Europe under royal patronage, and the town remained an important Mediterranean production center through the Baroque polychrome period and into the modern era. The municipal Ceramics Museum in Manises, founded in the 1960s, preserves seven centuries of local production.
