About the Item

A pair of Murano glass table lamps, hand-blown in Italy in the 1970s in white opaline with a spiraling optic swirl, mounted on polished brass with new white paper shades. Original wiring retained; a plug will be fitted for the country of use. Height includes lampshade. The swirl is worked into the body of the glass rather than applied to its surface — a ritorto optic, drawn as the vessel is blown, so that each rib turns through the wall of the piece and carries light along its own length. Unlit, the effect is quiet: a dense, milk-white glass with the ribs reading as low relief, almost a fluting, the surface catching a soft satin sheen at the shoulder where the form turns in toward the neck. Lit, the glass does something else entirely. The opaline goes warm and faintly rosy, the ribs separate into alternating bands of bright and shadow, and the whole vessel becomes a lantern. This is the point of the lamps, and it is why the switching matters. Each lamp carries two bulbs — one seated inside the glass body, one above it under the shade — and a single inline switch that advances through three positions. The interior bulb alone turns the base into a low, ambient glow with the shade dark above it. The upper bulb alone gives a conventional reading light through the paper shade, with the glass reading as a plain white form. Both together light the lamp end to end. Few lamps of this type survive with the mechanism intact and functioning. The mounts are brass — a broad disc foot, a collar at the neck, and a fluted riser to the socket — with the honest patina and light spotting of fifty years, not stripped and not refinished. The shades are new, in a textured white paper.
