About the Item

Antique Japanese standing mirror with wooden frame and stand made of quality, solid Keyaki Zelkova hardwood. It dates from the Meiji-Taisho era (1900s-1930s), as estimated by its style, material, and condition. The glass part of the mirror is gently wavy, as shown in the image 2,3 and 6. It shows the mirror part is as antique original. Back panels are made of solid Sugi cedar boards. During that period, Western-influenced styles were popular, especially among the wealthy, in everything from buildings to clothing and hairstyles. This standing mirror is clearly influenced by Western furniture, yet it still has some Japanese elements, such as the style of the legs and the characteristic presence of Keyaki wood. The mirror is firmly mounted to the legs using traditional joinery techniques. The neatly faceted mirror frames with the bottom panels are made using techniques similar to those used for wooden sliding doors. To the Japanese eye, this standing mirror evokes "Yokan," the Western-influenced mansions owned by wealthy families in large cities in Meiji-Taisho era. The lifestyles of the people in Yokan are featured in literature and paintings from that time and are still popular historical materials in various forms of art and entertainment. The restrained elegance and quiet confidence - and a bit of Japanese elements of this mirror reflect the aesthetics of Yokan.
