About the Item

An important, monumental mirror made of carved walnut and gilded wood, from the late 19th century, in the Louis XV style. The piece strikes a refined balance between the warm texture of walnut and the brilliance of the gilding, giving it a striking visual impact. The cornice is dominated by a pair of winged cherubs carved in high relief, surmounted by a sinuous vine with leaves and grape clusters—a decorative element that flows harmoniously along the top of the mirror. On the sides, slender, openwork volutes and rocaille-style leaf motifs rise upward, while the lower section is embellished with large, finely carved plant motifs. This period mirror exhibits the typical slight surface oxidation and natural patina that have developed over time—features particularly prized by collectors because they attest to the piece’s authenticity. In terms of craftsmanship, the richness of the carving, and the complexity of the ornamentation, the piece can be attributed to the high-end cabinetmaking of the late 19th century, created in the eclectic style that reinterpreted 18th-century French models.
