Handcrafted from cast bronze using the lost wax method, ‘Portal Mirror’ features a polished, reflective surface that captures light and form in mesmerizing ways. Elevated on a steel stand, it stands as an object of contemplation, merging art with introspective function. About: Founded in 1971 by American sculptor Charles D. Splady, Splady Art Studios has become one of the Bay Area’s enduring centers for sculptural innovation in metal. Rooted in traditional fine metalworking and casting techniques, the studio bridges art, architecture, and design with a commitment to material integrity and craft. For over five decades, the studio has played a pivotal role in the realization of significant works by leading artists including Peter Voulkos, Manuel Neri, Claes Oldenburg, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Isamu Noguchi, Henry Moore, Beniamino “Benny” Bufano, Robert Hudson, and many others. Its contributions are woven into the history of West Coast sculpture and beyond. Today, under continued leadership, the studio remains a site of experimentation and refinement—where bronze and steel are shaped through both traditional and contemporary processes. Known for its quiet mastery, technical precision, and deep material knowledge, Splady Art Studios supports artists in the development of ambitious works while continuing its own sculptural investigations.
