About the Item

A finely carved French mirror dating to the late 19th century, executed in solid oak with a lively openwork foliate frame. The hand carving is crisp and deep, with scrolling acanthus, budding leaves, and softly chamfered edges that create beautiful relief and shadow. The oak has a warm, even patina that highlights the grain and the sculptor’s tool marks. The mirror plate is beveled, catching the light and adding subtle depth to the reflection. Surface wear, tiny marks, and light age traces are consistent with careful use over time. The perimeter molding that seats the glass is neatly stepped and well joined. As was customary on quality mirrors of the period, the back is secured with paneled wooden boards that reinforce the structure and attest to its authenticity. (A photo of these rear panels can be provided on request.) Handsome at entry, above a console, or anchoring a salon wall, this piece bridges classical and eclectic interiors with ease—an elegant statement of 19th-century French craftsmanship.

19th Century Renaissance Revival Hand-Carved Oak Mirror

19th Century Renaissance Revival Hand-Carved Oak Mirror

Located in Dallas, TX

A striking 19th century Renaissance Revival mirror, hand-carved in oak with a beautifully pierced openwork frame and original beveled glass. The frame is richly sculpted with scrolling acanthus leaves and deeply carved foliage, creating wonderful movement, shadow, and dimensional relief. Renaissance Revival design drew from the strength, symmetry, and ornament of earlier European Renaissance forms, and this mirror carries that influence beautifully. The carved oak has developed a deep, time-worn patina that enhances the detail of the work and gives the piece its historic depth. Elegant, substantial, and full of character, this antique mirror brings the craftsmanship and presence of 19th century European furniture into today’s interiors. An added bonus ~ due to the equal treatment of all four sides of the frame, the mirror can be mounted horizontally if so desired, making it as versatile as it is beautiful to behold. Circa 1880s Measures 43.5H x 35W x 4D This piece is available at Inessa Stewart’s Antiques...
