About the Item

A particularly beautiful antique French Louis Philippe mirror, dating from the second half of the 19th century, with an old atelier stamp and date on the reverse. The mirror has the characteristic form of the Louis Philippe period: a rectangular frame with softly rounded upper corners, a broad molded profile, and a calm, elegant architectural outline. What makes this mirror especially distinctive is its rich decorative finish. While many Louis Philippe mirrors were entirely gilded or silver-gilt, this example has a predominantly black frame with finely engraved floral motifs in gold. The delicate vines, leaves, and flowers run gracefully around the frame and follow the rounded corners in a beautifully harmonious way. This creates a refined contrast between the deep black ground and the warm gilt decoration. The outer edge is finished with silver leaf and later treated with a yellow patina, giving it a soft pale gold appearance. This subtle gold tone frames the darker body of the mirror elegantly and adds depth to the overall composition. Along the mirror glass is a remarkable ornamental inner border. Instead of the more common pearl border often seen on Louis Philippe mirrors, this piece has a richer decorative molding, reminiscent of stylized leaves, tulips, or possibly a fleur-de-lis motif. This makes the mirror more unusual and decorative than most examples from the period. The original mirror glass is still present and remains in very good condition. It has a beautiful old reflection with only a few small spots and light age-related marks, all consistent with its age. The reverse still bears the original atelier stamp and date, further confirming the authenticity and provenance of the piece. Stylistically, the mirror belongs firmly within the French Louis Philippe period, when interiors became softer and more intimate than during the preceding Empire era. Forms became more rounded, ornamentation more refined, and furniture and mirrors acquired a more domestic yet still elegant character. This mirror reflects that transition beautifully: restrained in form, but rich in detail. The frame shows a wonderful timeworn surface, with subtle wear, small signs of use, and a natural patina. These age-related traces contribute greatly to the character of the piece and clearly show that this is an authentic 19th-century mirror. A rare and highly decorative French Louis Philippe mirror with a black lacquered frame, gilt engraved floral decoration, pale gold outer edge, unusual ornamental inner border, and original mirror glass with atelier stamp. A stylish and characterful piece that would work beautifully in both a classical interior and a more contemporary setting where a refined historical accent is desired.
