Italian Mid-Century Book-Form Wall Mirror in Walnut and Brass, Italy, 1950s
By Vittorio Dassi
Located in Buccinasco, MI
Elegant and architecturally refined Italian Mid-Century wall mirror, manufactured in Italy during the 1950s. This sculptural triptych mirror perfectly embodies the sophisticated balance between functionality and decorative design that characterized the finest Italian production of the post-war period. The piece is distinguished by its beautifully shaped solid walnut frame, featuring softly rounded profiles and a gently sculpted crest that lends movement and elegance to the overall composition. The central body is veneered with richly figured walnut, framed by a delicate contrasting light wood inlay that accentuates its refined proportions. The recessed geometric paneling on the front further enhances its architectural character. Behind the front panel lies an ingenious folding mirror system composed of three original mirrored panels enclosed within slender solid brass frames. The central mirror is flanked by two articulated side mirrors, each mounted on brass hinges that allow multiple viewing angles. This practical “book-opening” configuration transforms the piece from an elegant wall cabinet into a highly functional dressing mirror, allowing simultaneous front and profile views. The extremely thin brass frames create a light visual appearance while providing a refined metallic contrast against the warmth of the walnut. The precision of the hinge mechanism and the quality of the brass craftsmanship reflect the exceptional level of Italian cabinetmaking of the period. Unlike many surviving examples that have undergone extensive restoration or replacement of mirrored elements, this mirror retains all of its original period components. The original mirrors, brass frames, hinges, lock hardware, and wooden structure have all been preserved. The piece has only undergone a careful professional refinishing of the wooden surfaces, carried out to revive the original luster of the walnut while fully respecting the authentic patina and craftsmanship of the period. Both as a functional dressing mirror and as a sculptural decorative object, this piece lends itself equally well to bedrooms, dressing rooms, bathrooms, entrance halls, or refined hospitality interiors. When closed, it presents itself as an elegant walnut wall panel...
