his 19th-century squared silver mirror is a refined example of craftsmanship, highlighting a period when geometric balance and high-quality silvering techniques were at their peak. Unlike modern mass-produced mirrors, this piece is defined by its solid construction and the unique character of its "antique moon" glass. The frame is constructed from wood with a hand-applied silver leaf finish over a gesso base. Over more than a century, the silver has developed a soft, warm patina, shifting from a bright metallic sheen to a sophisticated pale grey tone. The squared silhouette offers a structured, architectural feel. The "Antique Moon" (the mirror glass itself) is the most vital element of the piece. As a 19th-century production, the glass often features a slightly wavy surface and tiny air bubbles trapped during the manual casting process. The silvering on the back shows characteristic "foxing"—small dark oxidations and misty patches that create a deep, moody reflection. This natural aging gives the mirror a soft, ethereal glow, very different from the clinical sharpness of modern glass. As a decorative object, this squared mirror acts as a "window into the past," combining the formal elegance of its shape with the raw, authentic history visible in its weathered silver and glass.
