STRATOS is a contemporary wall mirror that carries a measured retro resonance, drawing subtle inspiration from the optimistic visual culture of the American 1950s. The composition pairs a central reflective surface with two free-form glass planes, arranged at calibrated distances to construct a layered spatial effect. These chromatic panels introduce controlled color interference across the mirror, producing shifting tonal reflections and a perception of suspension. The elements appear to hover within the field of reflection, generating a quiet tension between surface and depth. Rather than replicating nostalgia, STRATOS reinterprets mid-century clarity through a contemporary lens. It operates as both a reflective device and a spatial composition, where chromatic overlays, dimensional separation, and disciplined geometry converge into a sculptural presence. Through this balance of retro reference and modern restraint, STRATOS becomes a contemporary reinterpretation of 20th-century optimism, structured, luminous, and architecturally poised. I am Giovanni Tommaso Garattoni, an Italian architect and designer. Since 1984, I have pursued an independent line of research exploring furniture and domestic objects not as purely functional artefacts, but as vehicles for imagination, memory and narrative. Emerging outside the dominant design narratives of its time, this investigation was shaped by nineteenth-century fantastic literature, European decadence, Futurism, the culture of speed, and the atmosphere of post-punk and new wave culture. From the outset, I was interested in creating objects capable of existing simultaneously as furniture, sculpture and inhabitable fiction. In 1986, I was among the four founding architects of the Bolidist Movement, bringing into the group a body of research that had already begun several years earlier and would continue to evolve independently throughout the following decades. Alongside this autonomous research, I developed a substantial professional practice in industrial design, gaining a deep understanding of materials, production processes and construction systems. Rather than existing as separate activities, these experiences continuously informed one another, allowing speculative ideas and narrative visions to engage with the realities of making and materiality. Over more than four decades, this continuous investigation has generated an extensive archive of furniture, mirrors, inhabitable sculptures, drawings and unrealised projects. Many of these works remained on paper or at prototype stage, forming a body of research developed largely outside the rhythms and expectations of the market. Today, this archive is being progressively reactivated, bringing historical projects into dialogue with new works and revealing the continuity of a research pursued across more than forty years. The Atelier Collections reintroduce selected historical projects alongside contemporary pieces derived from the same lineage of research. Mirrors of Perception extends this investigation through a contemporary exploration of the mirror as a perceptual, sculptural and narrative medium. My practice exists at the intersection of collectible design, sculpture and domestic architecture. Across different periods, materials and scales, the central question has remained unchanged: how can an object transform domestic space into a place of imagination?
