A fantastic first edition set of the Waverley novels of Sir Walter Scott, with seventeen of Scott's most important works present here, handsomely bound in half calf. A truly impressive set of seventeen works of historical fiction from Sir Walter Scott, all hailing from his important 'Waverley' series of novels, which were published between 1814 and 1831. Present here are fifteen first editions - two of which are scarce - and a further two early editions, all handsomely bound in half calf, with marbled paper covered boards. These seventeen works are bound in fifty-three volumes. The scarce 1815 first edition of ‘Guy Mannering’, complete in three volumes, retaining half titles and errata. Todd 82Aa. The 1816 first edition of ‘The Antiquary’, complete in three volumes, retaining half titled. Todd 94Aa. The 1816 sixth edition of ‘Waverley’, complete in three volumes. Retaining half title to each volume. The complete twelve volume first edition of ‘Tales of My Landlord’, with the first, second and third series all present in the first edition, 1816-1819, complete in twelve volumes. The first state of the first series, Todd 98Aa, with the grammatical error on page 234, volume I ('was heard [...] were perceived') uncorrected. first edition, first issue of the second series: with the misspelling 'Wichtcraft' to volume II, page 52, and with page 348 of volume IV miss numbered as 438. The first edition, first issue of the third series, Todd 135Aa. The scarce 1818 first edition, first issue of ‘Rob Roy’, complete in three volumes, retaining half titles. Todd 112Aa. The 1820 first edition, first issue of ‘Ivanhoe’ complete in three volumes. Retaining half title. With page 159 of volume I incorrectly paginated, as called for, and with single quotation mark after ‘journey’ on page 296. With the contemporary inscription of 'Fleming' to each title page. Condition Rebound in half calf with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, exceptionally bright, with instances of light fading to back strips, as is common with calf. Endpapers renewed. Internally, firmly bound. Inscription in ink to each title page. Pages age toned, with the odd spot, most concentrated to first and last few leaves of each volume. Overall: Very Good Indeed
