About the Item

Beautiful and finely hand-carved devotional sculpture of Our Lady of Lourdes, signed Gallo and dating from the Art Deco period. The Virgin Mary is portrayed standing in prayer, with her hands folded, a rosary hanging beside her robe and delicately carved roses decorating the base. Her long veil and flowing garments are rendered with elegant, restrained lines that give the sculpture a distinctly early twentieth-century character. The warm-toned figure is carved from walnut wood, while the face, praying hands and feet are made from a contrasting a light-toned composite material. This subtle combination of materials gives the sculpture a refined and expressive appearance, particularly in the softly modelled face and hands. The front of the carved base is inscribed “N.D. LOURDES,” the French abbreviation for Notre-Dame de Lourdes. The sculpture is also clearly signed Gallo, with the signature incised into the right side of the wooden base. This is the characteristic location in which the Gallo signature is found on these hand-carved devotional figures. The sculpture stands on a separate dark wooden plinth, which gives it additional stability and presents it beautifully. With its serene expression, warm patina and carefully carved details, this religious work would make a meaningful addition to a private collection, chapel, bedroom or quiet devotional setting.
