About the Item

Early 20th century industrial decimal platform scale constructed from solid pine and steel, retaining its original mechanical weighing system and a full set of iron counterweights. The scale is fitted with its original maker’s plate reading “Decimalwaage 300 kg Krft. D.R.G.M.”, indicating German patent protection (Deutsches Reichsgebrauchsmuster) and a maximum capacity of 300 kilograms. This type of decimal bascule was widely used in agricultural and commercial environments such as farms, warehouses, mills and trading houses, where heavy goods were weighed quickly and accurately. The large wooden platform receives the goods, while the weight is balanced using the suspended scale pan and iron counterweights through an ingenious system of levers. The construction combines a robust pine platform with a steel framework and mechanical components, creating a striking industrial appearance. The visible mechanism, chains and balance arm give the piece both technical interest and strong decorative presence. The bascule has been professionally cleaned in our workshop. The wooden structure was carefully treated and finished with a fresh wax layer, enhancing the natural grain and deep colour of the pine. The steel components were cleaned while preserving the original patina, maintaining the authentic aged character of the piece. Technically, the scale is fully functional. The piece displays a beautiful, honest patina developed over decades of use and comes complete with a full set of period weights. A remarkable example of early industrial weighing technology that also makes a powerful decorative statement in an interior.
